Ever wondered how the leaders of industry got to where they are today? They all had to start somewhere, right? Join us for the highly anticipated return of 'Intern to CEO', where we'll hear from those at the top as they share their journey through the arts.

Lisa Tregale started her career at the Dartington International Summer School (DISS). In this role she worked with Artistic Director Gavin Henderson in the development of one of the most successful summer schools and festivals in the country, working with international professionals from all genres of music. Lisa participated fully in the UK and European cultural sectors gaining experience in posts such as Executive Board member of the British Arts Festival Association and Vice President of the Conference of Promoters of New Music.

In 2004, Lisa became Director of Beaford Arts, a rural arts organisation working with communities across northern Devon and the beyond. In 2006 Lisa was appointed as CEO to create South West Music School, a centre for advanced training of exceptionally talented young musicians aged between 8 and 18. Through this role she played an active role in shaping music and music education agendas/strategies on the national level and was Founder/ Chair of Foundations for Excellence; an organisation focussed on health and wellbeing in the training of young musicians and dancers.

From 2013 – 2019 Lisa was Head of Participation and senior manager of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, working across all areas of musical participation from early years to older people in residential care and everything in between.

In January 2020 Lisa became Director of BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales and an Executive of BBC Cymru Wales - leading on strategy for the Nation's professional Symphony Orchestra and the governance of Wales' contribution to BBC broadcast and public service to Inform, Education and Entertain.

She is also a Trustee of Open Up Music / National Open Youth Orchestra, The Aloud Charity, Dartington International Summer School Foundation and a Board Member of the Association of British Orchestras.

A Music graduate from Royal Holloway, University of London, Ellie began her musical career playing violin in junior orchestras and singing in school choirs before receiving a Music performance scholarship to Solihull School. Throughout these years, she developed a deep love for choral music which would follow her to university where she was awarded a choral scholarship to the esteemed Choir of Royal Holloway. During her four years studying in Surrey, Ellie participated in multiple CD recordings and BBC Radio 3 broadcasts, three international tours and several concerts in London’s foremost venues. She is now excited to be singing with Harry Christophers’ prestigious ensemble, Genesis Sixteen.

Ellie is passionate about making classical music accessible to people from all backgrounds. During the pandemic, she started a podcast with a friend from university called ‘Down with the Patri-Bachy’, talking about the lives of under-represented composers. This contributed to being granted a place as a Trainee Presenter on BBC Radio 3’s brand new ‘Open Music’ scheme, during which time she was mentored by Chineke! Orchestra bassoonist, Linton Stephens. Through this, she was asked to host the launch event for the 2022 BBC Proms, and has since been commissioned for her first show on BBC Radio 3, ‘Sounds Connected’. She recently participated in the inaugural Chineke! Voices project, shedding light on the groundbreaking work of the first published Black composer, Vicente Lusitano. She is also the author of ‘Iconic People of Colour’, and hopes to continue making waves in the classical and cultural landscape.

Ellie is so grateful to be at this brilliant YPIA event — as a young person in the arts herself, she hopes that she can help show other young people that their life is what they make it!
